Share files in chats

You can upload files in chats to share them. You can create a folder structure in the shared file storage to organize the shared files.

Uploading files in chat

In the web/desktop client

  1. Go to the desired chat.

  2. Click on Attach.File.svg to the left of the message field .

  3. Drag and drop the files you want to share into the upload field or click the + at the bottom to select the file on your computer.

  4. You can optionally enter a message in the message field.

  5. Click on the paper airplane icon at the bottom right to send the file.

You can also make files available without sending them as a message:

  1. Go to the desired chat.

  2. Click on Info.svg in the top right corner.

  3. Click on "Shared files".

  4. Click on the + next to the search field.

  5. Select "Upload files".

  6. Select the file on your computer and confirm to upload the file.

Please note that other participants in the chat will not be notified when you upload files directly to the shared file storage.

In iOS

More editing options are available for images and videos; please refer to the article Send and edit images. This article covers uploading files that are not stored in the photo library.

  1. Go to the desired conversation or channel.

  2. Tap the Add.svg icon at the bottom left of the message field.

  3. A series of file selection options will appear below the message field.

  4. Tap "My Files". Your iPhone's file storage will open.

  5. Select the desired file by tapping on it in the file storage.

  6. Tap "Open" in the upper right corner.

You can also share files without sending them as a message:

  1. Go to the desired chat.

  2. Tap on the chat name at the top.

  3. Tap the "Shared files" field.

  4. Tap the circled Navigation.Horizontal.svg icon in the upper right corner.

  5. Select "Files", "Photos", or "Camera" to upload files directly from your iPhone's file storage, your photo library, or an image you can take with your camera to the shared file storage.

In Android

  1. Go to the desired chat.

  2. Tap the Attach.File.svg icon at the bottom left of the message field.

  3. A series of file selection options will appear below the message field.

  4. Tap on “Library” to open the file storage of your phone.

  5. Tap on the file you want to share.

You can also share files without sending them as a message:

  1. Go to the desired chat.

  2. Tap on the chat name at the top.

  3. Tap the "Shared files" field.

  4. Tap on + in the bottom right.

  5. Choose “Upload” or “Camera” to directly upload files to the shared file storage.

Organize and browse a chat's file storage

In the web/desktop client

  1. Go to the desired chat.

  2. Click on Info.svg in the top right corner.

  3. Click on "Shared files".

  4. Here you have the following options:

    1. Search files: Enter the search term in the search field at the top left. Please note: Only the currently displayed subfolder will be searched. Matching file name beginnings will be displayed. If the search term appears later in the file name than at the beginning, the file will not be displayed.

    2. Sorting files: You can sort files by type, size, name, and date in ascending or descending order. To do this, click on the down arrow below the search field. A menu will open. Select as desired.

In iOS

  1. Go to the desired chat.

  2. Tap the chat name at the top.

  3. Tap the "Shared files" field.

  4. Tap the circled Navigation.Horizontal.svg icon in the upper right corner.

  5. Here you have the following options:

    1. Sorting files: You can sort files by type, size, name, and date in ascending or descending order. To do this, tap the corresponding sort category. To change between ascending and descending order, open the menu again and tap the category. The order is indicated by an up or down arrow.

    2. Searching for files: Exit the menu. Tap the search field and search for the file name or parts of the file name.

    3. Add subfolders: Tap "Create Folder." Read Create multi-level folder structures in the file storage | In iOS .

    4. Select files: Tap "Select items." Here you can select multiple items by tapping on them. Icons for moving, sharing, exporting, and deleting appear at the bottom.

In Android

  1. Go to the desired chat.

  2. Tap on the chat name at the top.

  3. Tap the "Shared files" field.

  4. You have the following options:

    1. Search for files: Tap on Search.svg at the top . Search for the file name or parts of the file name in the search field.

    2. Sort files: Tap the icon with three lines of decreasing length at the top right. You can sort the files by type, size, name, and date in ascending or descending order. Select one of the eight options from the list.

    3. Add subfolder: Tap the + at the bottom. Read Create multi-level folder structures in the file storage | In Android.
