Edit a channel (user)

You can change some of the settings that were selected when the channel was created.

As a user, you cannot edit the channel type, i.e., the encryption type of the channel. Administrators can assign passwords to public channels. For more information, see the articleEdit a channel (Admin).

In the web/desktop client

  1. Click on the channel you want to edit.

  2. Click on the Navigation.Vertical.svg icon in the upper right corner.

  3. Select "Edit channel".

  4. The "Edit channel" view opens. You have the following options:

    1. You can change the channel name. You cannot leave the channel name blank. No two channels can have the same name.

    2. You can edit or remove the channel description.

    3. You can edit the channel image. To do this, go to step 5 of the linked article.

    4. In an encrypted channel you can edit whether the channel can be found via the channel search. Click on the “Hidden” slider.

    5. In a password-protected channel, you can change the password. To do this, enter a new password and repeat it in the field below.

    6. In encrypted and password-protected channels, you can edit the edit invitation permissions by clicking the "Invitation permissions" button. Once the button has been clicked, only channel managers can invite new users to the channel.

    7. You can set the channel to "Read-Only" so that only channel managers can write messages. To do this, press the "Read-Only" button.

    8. You can set the channel so that event information is not displayed. This includes, for example, join and leave notifications, invitations to polls, or invitations to events. If you do not want any event information to be displayed, click the "Show event information" button. If you only want to disable join and leave notifications, click the "Join/Leave notifications" button.

  5. Click on "Save changes".

If you do not see the "Read-Only" setting option, contact your administrator or, if you are an administrator, read the article Activate additional tools (Calender, surveys, jitsi-videoconferences and more) and activate the "Read-Only" module.

In iOS

  1. Tap on the channel you want to edit.

  2. Tap the channel name at the top.

  3. Tap " Pen.svg Edit" at the bottom center under the name.

  4. The "Edit Channel" view opens. You have the following options:

    1. You can change the channel name. You cannot leave the channel name blank. No two channels can have the same name.

    2. You can edit or remove the channel description.

    3. You can edit the channel image. To do this, go to step 8 of the linked article.

    4. In an encrypted channel you can edit whether the channel can be found via the channel search. Tap on the “Hidden” slider.

    5. In a password-protected channel, you can change the password. To do this, enter a new password and repeat it in the field below.

    6. In encrypted and password-protected channels, you can edit the edit invitation rights by clicking the "Invitation permissions" switch. When the switch is activated, only channel managers can invite new users to the channel.

    7. You can set the channel to "Read-Only" so that only channel managers can write messages. To do this, press the "Read-Only" button.

    8. You can tap on "Advanced settings." Here you can set that event information is not displayed. This includes, for example, entry and exit messages, invitations to surveys, or invitations to appointments. If you do not want any event information to be displayed, press the "Show event information" button. If you only want to deactivate the join and leave notifications, press the "Join and leave notifications" button.

  5. Tap on "Save changes".

In Android

  1. Tap on the channel you want to edit.
